Fit & measurements

One coordinated fitting

Full kilt outfit measurement guide

Measure the kilt and jacket in one session so the outfit proportions work together. Complete only the fields shown for your chosen package. Record kilt and jacket measurements in inches; include the unit with your height and follow the headwear or footwear field’s stated unit.

  • 13measurements
  • 1helper needed
  • 2×measure each set
Full outfit measuring illustration: collar, chest, sleeve, foot length, high kilt waistband, fullest seat and hips, upright kneeling waist-to-floor kilt length, and jacket back length
Tap the diagram to open it full size. F (fell), W (jacket waist), S (shoulder), H (headwear) and Ht (height) are additional written points. Each measurement is also explained in the readable instructions below.

Before you begin

Prepare for the fitting

Have one helper take every measurement, then repeat the complete set once.

  1. Wear a collared shirt and light trousers.

  2. Empty pockets and remove bulky layers.

  3. Stand naturally and keep the tape level.

  4. Record full height plus every requested body measurement.

Kilt measurements

Use the same kilt waistline for the waist, fell and length.

5

Kilt waist

Around

Measure snugly around your waist at, or up to 2 in (5 cm) above, your belly button. Keep the tape horizontal, breathe normally and do not pull in your stomach.

Note: this is higher than your trouser waist.

6

Seat / hips

Around

Level around the fullest part of the hips and seat.

7

Kilt length

Vertical

Kneel upright and measure from the kilt waistline to the floor. Give us the measurement exactly as taken. Do not subtract anything, because we make the kilt to that length, and it will finish at the middle of the kneecap when you stand.

Different hem? For above the knee or midi length for women's kilts, tell us in the order notes.

Fell

If requested

Measure from the kilt waistline to fullest-seat level; see the detailed kilt guide for the matching diagram.

Typical: about 7 to 9 in (18 to 23 cm) for most adults. If yours is far outside that, measure again or contact us.

Jacket & waistcoat

Body measurements only. Do not add ease unless the product asks.

Open the jacket & waistcoat guide
2

Chest

Around

Close around the fullest chest and shoulder blades.

3

Sleeve

Length

Measure from the shoulder point, over a slightly bent elbow, to the wrist bone.

8

Back length

Vertical

Measure from the prominent bone at the base of the neck straight down to the required jacket length.

Jacket waist

Around

Measure around your natural waist where the jacket will sit. Keep the tape level without pulling it tight.

Shoulder

Across

Measure straight across the back from one shoulder point to the other.

Shirt & accessories

Finish with the collar, feet, head and your height.

1

Collar

Around

Measure around the base of your neck where the collar will sit. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug.

Headwear

Around

Measure around the head just above the eyebrows and ears, passing over the widest point at the back. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug.

Yes. If a measurement seems unusual, or you are not sure about a measuring point, contact us before ordering and our team will help you review it. Production may not begin until your details are complete.

Tartan & colour

Will the colours look exactly like the photos?

Screen settings, lighting, woven materials and pattern placement can cause small, reasonable differences in colour, texture or where the pattern falls. Measurements and dimensions are approximate unless the product or a written confirmation says otherwise.

What do "Ancient" and "Modern" mean in a tartan name?

They are colour shades of the same sett. Ancient uses softer, lighter tones and Modern uses deeper, stronger tones. The pattern itself is the same.

My tartan is not listed. Can you help?

Often, yes. We can weave a tartan no mill stocks, from a photo, scan, sketch or thread count. Asking for a quote is free.
