Tartan designer questions
Is the tartan designer free to use?
Yes. You can design, save and share as many tartans as you like. You only pay if you choose to have your design woven and made up after receiving your quote.
What is a sett and a threadcount?
The sett is the pattern of stripes that repeats across the cloth. A threadcount writes it down as colour codes and the number of threads in each stripe, for example G/24 K4 R8 Y/2, which is what a weaver needs to reproduce the tartan exactly.
What is the difference between mirrored and repeating?
Most tartans are mirrored (symmetrical): the stripes reflect at two pivot points, so the pattern reads the same in both directions. A repeating (asymmetrical) tartan runs the stripe sequence in one direction and then starts again.
How many colours can a tartan have?
Most traditional tartans use between two and six colours. Mills usually weave up to eight, so the designer warns you if you go beyond that.
Will the woven cloth look exactly like the screen?
Screens show colour differently, so the preview is a close guide rather than an exact match. We confirm the yarn colours with you before anything is woven.
How do I save my design?
Your design is stored in the page link. Use Copy link to keep it or send it to someone, and open the link at any time to carry on editing. You can also download an image with the threadcount.
Can I have my design made into a kilt?
Yes. Press Get a quote, choose a kilt, fabric, trews or accessories, and our team will reply by email with a personal quote. Nothing is woven until you approve it.
