How can we help?
47 answers on ordering, sizing, tartans, delivery and returns. If you need more, our team is a message away.
Ordering & payment
Which payment methods can I use?
Available payment methods are shown at checkout and may change. Your bank or payment provider may add conversion or transaction charges.
Which currency will I pay in?
Prices show in the currency selected for the store, and you can change it from the top of any page. The final price, taxes, delivery charge and total are shown at checkout before you place your order.
When is my order confirmed?
The automatic email confirms we received your order. The order is accepted when we confirm it or dispatch it, whichever comes first.
Can I change my delivery address after ordering?
Contact us as soon as you notice the error. We cannot promise a change once production, packing or dispatch has begun.
What happens if an item becomes unavailable?
We will contact you about an alternative, or cancel that item and refund you.
Should I check anything before placing a custom order?
Yes. Please check measurements, spelling, tartan choices, colours and customisation instructions before you submit. We may contact you if something needs clarifying, and production may not begin until the details are confirmed.
Sizing & measuring
Which measurements do I need for a kilt?
Waist, hip / seat, fell and kilt length, all in inches. Use a flexible tailor's tape, keep it level and measure every point twice.
Open the measuring guideIs my kilt waist the same as my trouser size?
Usually not. For a traditional kilt, measure at your intended waistband, at or up to 2 inches above your belly button. Follow a lower wearing position only when the product specifies it.
Can I measure myself?
It is best to ask another person. Stand naturally in light clothing; for the kilt length you need to kneel upright without looking down, which is hard to measure alone.
What is the fell?
The vertical distance from your intended kilt waistline down to the fullest part of your hips and seat. It is a straight-down measurement, not a circumference.
Can you check my measurements?
Yes. Contact us before ordering if a measurement seems unusual or you are unsure where the kilt should sit.
Tartans & clans
How do I find my family tartan?
Use the Tartan Finder to search by tartan name, clan, family, place, colour or pattern, or browse family tartans A to Z. Each result opens a page about its heritage and design.
Open the Tartan FinderHow many tartans can I choose from?
The Tartan Finder lists more than 7,000 tartans across clan, family, district, royal, military, corporate and fashion collections. Use the "Available to order" filter to see the ones with a current buying option.
What do "Ancient" and "Modern" mean?
They are colour shades of the same sett. Ancient uses softer, lighter tones and Modern uses deeper, stronger tones. The pattern itself is the same.
Why does the fabric look slightly different from the photo?
Screens, lighting, woven materials and pattern placement can cause small, reasonable differences in colour and where the pattern falls. When colour matters, order a sample first.
My tartan is not listed. Can you make it?
Often, yes. Request it from the tartan selector on a product, or ask us to weave a custom tartan.

How do I design my own tartan?
Start with what you have: a photo, a sketch, a list of colours or a thread count. Upload it on our custom tartan page, tell us what you would like made, and we will turn it into a weavable design and a personal quote. You can also build it in our tartan designer.
Open the tartan designerCan you recreate a tartan from a photo?
Often, yes. A clear, straight-on photo in daylight, showing at least one full repeat, lets us read the colours and the sett. Old kilts, scarves and family photographs are all good starting points.
How much does a custom tartan cost?
Every custom tartan is priced individually, because cost depends on the design, the cloth and what you would like made. Asking for a quote is free and there is no obligation to order.
Request a quoteWhat can be made in my tartan?
Kilts and full kilt outfits, trews, fabric by the metre, scarves, ties and other accessories. Tell us everything in one request and we will quote for it together.
How long does a custom tartan take?
Timings vary with the design and the weaving schedule. Tell us your date, for example a wedding, and we will confirm what is possible in your quote. Nothing is woven until you approve it.
Can my tartan be registered?
New designs can be recorded with the Scottish Register of Tartans. Tick the box in the quote form and we will include advice on registering it.
Fabric by the metre
Which fabric should I choose?
Start with the finished piece. Kilt-weight tartan gives body and defined pleats; lightweight tartan suits dresses, skirts and accessories; tweed suits tailoring and accessories. Always check the individual weight too.
Read the fabric buying guideHow much fabric do I need?
Measure the project first, then allow for seams, hems, pleats and pattern matching. For precise work, ask your kiltmaker or tailor to calculate the length.
Can I order a sample?
Yes. A sample lets you judge colour, pattern scale, texture and weight in person before buying a larger length.
Can I get one continuous length?
If your project needs one uncut piece, ask us to confirm availability before ordering.
Outfits & occasions
How should I put a kilt outfit together?
Start with the kilt and the level of dress, then add the jacket, shirt and accessories. Building from the kilt outward keeps the look coherent.
Build your kilt outfitCan you help me choose for a wedding?
Yes. Tell us the occasion, date, tartan preference and measurements, and our team can help you choose. Contact us before ordering if you need it by a set date.
Can a wedding party wear a shared tartan?
Yes. We can combine two families' colours into one wedding tartan for the groom and groomsmen, then make the kilts and accessories.
Custom tartanDelivery
How much does delivery cost?
Delivery options and charges are shown at checkout once you enter your address. Free-shipping offers apply only while displayed and when checkout confirms the order qualifies.
How long will my order take?
It depends on the product. Ready-to-dispatch items ship sooner than made-to-order or made-to-measure ones, and carrier time starts after dispatch. All dates are estimates unless we confirm a fixed date in writing.
Delivery informationDo you deliver internationally?
Yes. Available services and charges for your destination are shown at checkout.
Do I pay customs or import duties?
International orders may incur customs, duties, taxes or carrier charges at the destination. Unless checkout states they are included, the recipient pays them. Customs checks can also affect delivery times.
How do I track my order?
When tracking is available, we send the details to the contact information on your order. It can take a little time for the first carrier scan to appear.
What if my parcel is returned to you?
If a parcel comes back because the address was incomplete, delivery was refused or it was not collected, we will review it and confirm the next step and any cost before acting.
My parcel is late, missing or damaged. What should I do?
Check the tracking and any safe places first. Then contact us with your order number and photos where relevant, and keep the product and packaging while we investigate.
Returns & refunds
What is your return period?
Standard, non-personalised products can be returned within 30 days of delivery. This is in addition to your statutory rights, including the 14-day cancellation period for UK distance purchases.
Returns & refunds policyWhat condition must returns be in?
For returns under our 30-day policy, items should be unused, unworn beyond reasonable fitting, unwashed and unaltered, with tags and original packaging where reasonably possible.
How do I start a return?
Email us or use our contact form with your order number, and we will send the correct return address. Please do not send items to our registered office unless we ask you to.
Who pays for return postage?
You pay for change-of-mind returns; we recommend a tracked service. We cover the reasonable cost for faulty, damaged or incorrect items.
When will I get my refund?
For a cancellation, within 14 days of receiving the goods back or your proof of posting, to your original payment method. We do not charge a refund fee, but your bank may take extra time to show it.
Can I exchange an item?
Exchanges depend on availability. A replacement made-to-order item may need a new production period.
Can I return made-to-measure items?
Not normally for a change of mind once production has begun. Faulty, damaged, incorrect or not-as-described items are always covered.
Care
How do I look after my kilt or Highland wear?
Follow the care information supplied with each product. Natural materials, woven fabrics, leather and metalwork can each need different handling.
The care method is unclear. What should I do?
Contact us before using any cleaning or treatment that could affect the fabric, colour, leather, metalwork or fit.
