Four careful measurements

Kilt measurement guide

A kilt normally sits higher than everyday trousers. Measure the body where the product says the kilt will be worn and never submit your jeans size as a substitute.

Get ready

Before you begin

  1. Use a flexible tailor's tape.

  2. Wear a shirt and light trousers, with empty pockets.

  3. Stand upright, relaxed and looking straight ahead.

  4. Record waist, hips, fell and kilt length in inches, as required by the product options. Measure twice.

Step by step

The four measurements

Use the same kilt waistline for the waist, fell and length.

1

Waist

Around

For a traditional kilt, measure snugly around your waist at, or up to 2 in (5 cm) above, your belly button. Keep the tape horizontal, breathe normally and do not pull in your stomach. If the product is designed to sit lower, measure at the exact wearing position stated on that product.

Note: this is higher than your trouser waist.

2

Hip or seat

Around

With feet together, measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat. The tape must remain level around the body and should touch without compressing.

3

Fell, when requested

If requested

Measure vertically from the chosen kilt waistline to the level of the fullest part of the seat. This is the waist-to-hip drop used to place the end of the sewn-down pleats. Only enter it when the product asks for a fell measurement.

Typical: for most adults this is about 7 to 9 in (18 to 23 cm). If yours is far outside that, measure again or contact us.

4

Kilt length

Vertical

Stand upright and look straight ahead. Ask your helper to measure vertically from the top of your chosen kilt waistband to the desired hem position. For a traditional knee-length finish, use the middle of the kneecap. Keep the tape straight and do not bend or look down while measuring.

Record this waistband-to-hem measurement in inches. The tape should end at your chosen hem position, not continue to the floor. Take body measurements over light clothing, not over an existing kilt.
