Questions about custom tartan
How do I design my own tartan?
Start with what you have: a photo, a sketch, a list of colours or a thread count. Upload it with the form on this page, tell us what the tartan means to you and what you would like made, and our team will turn it into a weavable design and a personal quote.
Can you recreate a tartan from just a photo?
Often, yes. A clear, straight-on photo in good light lets us read the colours and the sett (the repeating pattern). Old kilts, scarves and family photographs are all good starting points. If the image is not enough, we will tell you what else would help.
How much does a custom tartan cost?
Every custom tartan is priced individually, because cost depends on the design, the cloth and what you would like made. Asking for a quote is free and there is no obligation to order.
Can I have a kilt made in my own tartan?
Yes. Your tartan can be made into a kilt or full kilt outfit, trews, fabric by the metre, scarves, ties and other accessories. Tell us everything you would like in one request and we will quote for it together.
Is there a minimum order?
It depends on the design and what you would like made. Your quote sets out quantities, options and price, so you can decide with all the details in front of you.
How long does a custom tartan take?
Timings vary with the design and the weaving schedule. Tell us your date in the form, for example a wedding or anniversary, and we will confirm what is possible in your quote.
Can my tartan be registered?
New designs can be recorded with the Scottish Register of Tartans. Tick the box in the form and we will include advice on registering your tartan with your quote.
What files can I upload?
JPG, PNG, WebP or PDF, up to 4 files. Large photos are resized in your browser before sending.
