Fit & measurements

Size, fold and placement

Fly plaid size & wearing guide

A fly plaid is normally a square of matching tartan rather than a fitted garment. In most cases you choose the tartan, not a body size, but the product dimensions should always be checked.

Get ready

Check the product specification

  1. Confirm the listed finished width and length.

  2. Match the tartan and colourway to the kilt.

  3. Check whether a plaid brooch is included or sold separately.

  4. Confirm that your jacket has a suitable left shoulder epaulette.

Step by step

Size, fold and placement

Check the dimensions first, then fold and place.

1

Finished width

Width

Lay the plaid fully open on a clean, flat surface and measure straight across from finished edge to finished edge. Do not include loose fringe in the measurement.

2

Finished length

Length

Measure from the top finished edge to the bottom finished edge. Common examples are approximately 100 x 100 cm or 115 x 115 cm, but these are not universal standards.

3

Fold diagonally

Fold

Bring one corner towards the opposite corner to form a broad triangle, then make neat diagonal folds until the shoulder section is comfortable and controlled.

4

Place on the left shoulder

Placement

Place the folded section over the left shoulder. If the jacket has an epaulette, pass the plaid through it. Fasten the brooch through the plaid layers, not through the jacket fabric.

5

Arrange the tail

Drape

Let the long point fall neatly down the back. Adjust the diagonal drape until it sits securely without pulling at the shoulder.

Options & customising

Can I add notes or special instructions?

Yes. Use the Additional Information box. Share any relevant sizing, tartan, or customisation notes for your order.

Tartan & colour

Will the colours look exactly like the photos?

Screen settings, lighting, woven materials and pattern placement can cause small, reasonable differences in colour, texture or where the pattern falls. Measurements and dimensions are approximate unless the product or a written confirmation says otherwise.

What do "Ancient" and "Modern" mean in a tartan name?

They are colour shades of the same sett. Ancient uses softer, lighter tones and Modern uses deeper, stronger tones. The pattern itself is the same.

My tartan is not listed. Can you help?

Often, yes. We can weave a tartan no mill stocks, from a photo, scan, sketch or thread count. Asking for a quote is free.

Making & delivery

Can I get this item faster?

Yes. Tick Rush Order for "7-10 Day Delivery", which adds 17,55 €. Choose rush production only when needed. The displayed surcharge is added to the product price. If you need it for a fixed date, contact us before ordering.

When will my order be dispatched?

Ready-to-dispatch and made-to-order products have different preparation times. Made-to-measure and personalised items may not enter production until your measurements, choices and other details are complete. Orders with mixed lead times may ship together when the longest item is ready, or separately.

I need it for a wedding or event. Can you meet my date?

Contact us before ordering so we can advise whether your date looks achievable. Production, dispatch and carrier times are estimates unless we confirm a fixed date in writing.

How much is delivery?

Available delivery services and the final charge are shown at checkout once you enter your address. Any free-shipping offer applies only while it is displayed and checkout confirms your order qualifies.

Will I pay customs or import duties?

International deliveries may be subject to customs, import duties, taxes or carrier charges set by the destination. Unless checkout states they are included, the recipient pays them.
