Lumsden Ancient Tartan Kilt in the Lumsden Ancient Tartan pattern

The Lumsden Ancient Tartan Kilt is a focused choice for wearing the Lumsden Ancient Tartan tartan at the moments where pattern and fit matter most. Use it as the foundation for a wedding outfit, a Highland gathering, a cultural celebration or a personal expression of Scottish heritage.

The Lumsden Ancient Tartan pattern is listed as an ancient design associated with the family or clan group, with a recorded palette of White, Cream, Light Green. The tartan reference material is Acrylic Yarn, and the pattern is associated with Highland Games. These details are useful when matching a jacket, shirt, sporran, flashes or brooch: repeat one or two of the tartan tones rather than adding every colour at once.

The traditional kilt shape keeps the tartan visible through the front apron and pleated sections, giving the garment its familiar Highland profile. Compare the waist, length, fastening finish and pleat arrangement shown on the product page so the selected option matches how you intend to wear it.

Before ordering, check the selected waist size and kilt length, then confirm what is included with this individual product. A belt, sporran, shirt, flashes and footwear are normally styled separately unless the product details say otherwise. If the kilt is being chosen for a wedding or formal event, allow time to coordinate the tartan tones with the jacket and accessories.

The easiest way to make the tartan feel intentional is to let it remain the strongest pattern in the outfit. A plain or lightly textured shirt gives the sett room to stand out, while a jacket in a quiet neutral tone can frame the kilt without competing with it. A sporran, belt and flashes can then pick up one or two colours from the tartan rather than introducing several unrelated shades.

Fit matters just as much as pattern when the kilt will be worn for several hours. Take the waist measurement exactly as requested on the product page and check the length against the footwear you expect to wear. For a formal outfit, allow room for the kilt to sit securely without being uncomfortable when standing, sitting or walking. If you are between sizes or ordering for someone else, review the available sizing guidance before choosing an option.

The same tartan can suit different settings depending on how it is styled. Pair this kilt with a jacket, waistcoat and polished footwear for a wedding or formal celebration; use a shirt, boots and a simpler sporran for a relaxed gathering or Highland event. The named tartan also makes it easier to choose coordinating accessories later, because the pattern provides a clear colour reference for the rest of the wardrobe.

After wearing, let the garment air before storing it and follow the care guidance supplied with the product. Keep the kilt hanging in a way that protects the pleats and avoid compressing it under heavy clothing. Before purchase, compare the displayed tartan images, selected size, length, fastening details and included items so the finished garment matches the occasion you have in mind.

Fit & measurements

Four careful measurements

Kilt measurement guide

A kilt normally sits higher than everyday trousers. Measure the body where the product says the kilt will be worn and never submit your jeans size as a substitute.

  • 4measurements
  • 1helper needed
  • 2×measure twice
Kilt measuring illustration: 1 waist at the waistband, 2 fullest seat and hips, 3 vertical fell from waistband to seat, 4 standing length from the top of the waistband to the desired hem
Tap the diagram to open it full size. Each measurement is also explained in the readable instructions below.

Get ready

Before you begin

  1. Use a flexible tailor's tape.

  2. Wear a shirt and light trousers, with empty pockets.

  3. Stand upright, relaxed and looking straight ahead.

  4. Record waist, hips, fell and kilt length in inches, as required by the product options. Measure twice.

Step by step

The four measurements

Use the same kilt waistline for the waist, fell and length.

1

Waist

Around

For a traditional kilt, measure snugly around your waist at, or up to 2 in (5 cm) above, your belly button. Keep the tape horizontal, breathe normally and do not pull in your stomach. If the product is designed to sit lower, measure at the exact wearing position stated on that product.

Note: this is higher than your trouser waist.

2

Hip or seat

Around

With feet together, measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat. The tape must remain level around the body and should touch without compressing.

3

Fell, when requested

If requested

Measure vertically from the chosen kilt waistline to the level of the fullest part of the seat. This is the waist-to-hip drop used to place the end of the sewn-down pleats. Only enter it when the product asks for a fell measurement.

Typical: for most adults this is about 7 to 9 in (18 to 23 cm). If yours is far outside that, measure again or contact us.

4

Kilt length

Vertical

Stand upright and look straight ahead. Ask your helper to measure vertically from the top of your chosen kilt waistband to the desired hem position. For a traditional knee-length finish, use the middle of the kneecap. Keep the tape straight and do not bend or look down while measuring.

Record this waistband-to-hem measurement in inches. The tape should end at your chosen hem position, not continue to the floor. Take body measurements over light clothing, not over an existing kilt.

Different hem? For above the knee or midi length for women's kilts, tell us in the order notes.

Sizing & fit

Which measurements do I need for this item?

4 measurements: Waist, Hip, Fell and Kilt Length. Hip and Fell are optional. Ask someone to measure you, keep the tape level and measure every point twice.

Open this product’s size guide
How do I measure my waist?

Measure around your natural waist where you plan to wear the kilt. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug without pulling it tight. Sizes run from 20 in / 50.8 cm to 70 in / 177.8 cm. Some larger sizes add a small surcharge, shown in the list.

How do I measure my hip?

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. Keep the tape level and leave enough room for a comfortable fit. Sizes run from 25 in / 63.5 cm to 70 in / 177.8 cm.

How do I measure my fell?

Measure vertically from your natural waist to the widest part of your hips. This helps us shape the upper section of your kilt correctly. Sizes run from 3 in / 7.6 cm to 13 in / 33.0 cm.

How do I measure my kilt length?

Stand straight and measure from your natural waist to the middle of your kneecap. For the most accurate result, ask someone to help you. Sizes run from 13 in / 33.0 cm to 36 in / 91.4 cm. Some larger sizes add a small surcharge, shown in the list.

Where should the kilt waist sit?

For a traditional kilt, measure at your intended waistband, at or up to 2 inches above your belly button. A traditional kilt is worn higher than most trousers, so your kilt waist will often differ from the size printed on your trousers. Do not enter your usual trouser size.

Can you check my measurements before I order?

Yes. If a measurement seems unusual, or you are not sure about a measuring point, contact us before ordering and our team will help you review it. Production may not begin until your details are complete.

Tartan & colour

Will the colours look exactly like the photos?

Screen settings, lighting, woven materials and pattern placement can cause small, reasonable differences in colour, texture or where the pattern falls. Measurements and dimensions are approximate unless the product or a written confirmation says otherwise.

What do "Ancient" and "Modern" mean in a tartan name?

They are colour shades of the same sett. Ancient uses softer, lighter tones and Modern uses deeper, stronger tones. The pattern itself is the same.

My tartan is not listed. Can you help?

Often, yes. We can weave a tartan no mill stocks, from a photo, scan, sketch or thread count. Asking for a quote is free.
