Product details

Lister (Misty Mountain) is a family tartan designed by David Lister in July 2012 and recorded in the Scottish Register of Tartans, reference 10650.

Grey represents mountain mist, brown the family’s matriarchal line and the mountains, and gold morning sunlight.

Enter your measurements in inches, select your pleating preference and add special instructions. This fixed-tartan kilt uses the Lister design shown.

The kilt image is a digital mockup.

The swatch illustrates the registered design. Screen colours, apparent sett size and pattern placement may differ from woven cloth.

Fit & measurements

Four careful measurements

Kilt measurement guide

A kilt normally sits higher than everyday trousers. Measure the body where the product says the kilt will be worn and never submit your jeans size as a substitute.

  • 4measurements
  • 1helper needed
  • 2×measure twice
Kilt measuring illustration: 1 waist at the waistband, 2 fullest seat and hips, 3 vertical fell from waistband to seat, 4 standing length from the top of the waistband to the desired hem
Tap the diagram to open it full size. Each measurement is also explained in the readable instructions below.

Get ready

Before you begin

  1. Use a flexible tailor's tape.

  2. Wear a shirt and light trousers, with empty pockets.

  3. Stand upright, relaxed and looking straight ahead.

  4. Record waist, hips, fell and kilt length in inches, as required by the product options. Measure twice.

Step by step

The four measurements

Use the same kilt waistline for the waist, fell and length.

1

Waist

Around

For a traditional kilt, measure snugly around your waist at, or up to 2 in (5 cm) above, your belly button. Keep the tape horizontal, breathe normally and do not pull in your stomach. If the product is designed to sit lower, measure at the exact wearing position stated on that product.

Note: this is higher than your trouser waist.

2

Hip or seat

Around

With feet together, measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat. The tape must remain level around the body and should touch without compressing.

3

Fell, when requested

If requested

Measure vertically from the chosen kilt waistline to the level of the fullest part of the seat. This is the waist-to-hip drop used to place the end of the sewn-down pleats. Only enter it when the product asks for a fell measurement.

Typical: for most adults this is about 7 to 9 in (18 to 23 cm). If yours is far outside that, measure again or contact us.

4

Kilt length

Vertical

Stand upright and look straight ahead. Ask your helper to measure vertically from the top of your chosen kilt waistband to the desired hem position. For a traditional knee-length finish, use the middle of the kneecap. Keep the tape straight and do not bend or look down while measuring.

Record this waistband-to-hem measurement in inches. The tape should end at your chosen hem position, not continue to the floor. Take body measurements over light clothing, not over an existing kilt.

Different hem? For above the knee or midi length for women's kilts, tell us in the order notes.

QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU ORDER

Frequently asked questions

Answers about the Lister (Misty Mountain) Tartan Kilt, from sizing to delivery.

Options & customising

Which pleat styles can I choose?

Choose Sett Pleats or Stripe Pleats (+17,55 €). Any surcharge shown is added to the price.

Can I add notes or special instructions?

Yes. Use the Special Instructions box. Tell us anything we should know about your order; we will contact you if clarification is needed.

Sizing & fit

Which measurements do I need for this item?

4 measurements: Waist, Hip, Fell and Kilt Length. Hip and Fell are optional. Ask someone to measure you, keep the tape level and measure every point twice.

Open this product’s size guide
Where should the kilt waist sit?

For a traditional kilt, measure at your intended waistband, at or up to 2 inches above your belly button. A traditional kilt is worn higher than most trousers, so your kilt waist will often differ from the size printed on your trousers. Do not enter your usual trouser size.

How do I measure the kilt length?

Kneel upright with your back straight and ask your helper to measure from the kilt waistline down to the floor. Do not bend forward or look down.

Can you check my measurements before I order?

Yes. If a measurement seems unusual, or you are not sure about a measuring point, contact us before ordering and our team will help you review it. Production may not begin until your details are complete.

Tartan & colour

Will the colours look exactly like the photos?

Screen settings, lighting, woven materials and pattern placement can cause small, reasonable differences in colour, texture or where the pattern falls. Measurements and dimensions are approximate unless the product or a written confirmation says otherwise.

What do "Ancient" and "Modern" mean in a tartan name?

They are colour shades of the same sett. Ancient uses softer, lighter tones and Modern uses deeper, stronger tones. The pattern itself is the same.

My tartan is not listed. Can you help?

Often, yes. We can weave a tartan no mill stocks, from a photo, scan, sketch or thread count. Asking for a quote is free.

Making & delivery

Can I get this item faster?

Yes. Tick Rush Order for "Priority production within 7–10 working days", which adds 43,86 €. Shipping time begins after dispatch. If you need it for a fixed date, contact us before ordering.

When will my order be dispatched?

Ready-to-dispatch and made-to-order products have different preparation times. Made-to-measure and personalised items may not enter production until your measurements, choices and other details are complete. Orders with mixed lead times may ship together when the longest item is ready, or separately.

I need it for a wedding or event. Can you meet my date?

Contact us before ordering so we can advise whether your date looks achievable. Production, dispatch and carrier times are estimates unless we confirm a fixed date in writing.

How much is delivery?

Available delivery services and the final charge are shown at checkout once you enter your address. Any free-shipping offer applies only while it is displayed and checkout confirms your order qualifies.

Will I pay customs or import duties?

International deliveries may be subject to customs, import duties, taxes or carrier charges set by the destination. Unless checkout states they are included, the recipient pays them.
