Four careful measurements

Women's kilt measurement guide

A kilt normally sits higher than everyday trousers. Measure the body where the product says the kilt will be worn and never submit your jeans size as a substitute.

Get ready

Before you begin

  1. Use a flexible tailor's tape.

  2. Wear a shirt and light trousers, with empty pockets.

  3. Stand upright, relaxed and looking straight ahead.

  4. Record waist, hips, fell and kilt length in inches, as required by the product options. Measure twice.

Step by step

The four measurements

Use the same kilt waistline for the waist, fell and length.

1

Waist

Around

Measure snugly around your natural waist: the narrowest part of your torso, usually 1 to 2 in above the belly button. Keep the tape horizontal, breathe normally and do not pull in your stomach. If the product is designed to sit lower, measure at the exact wearing position stated on that product.

2

Hip or seat

Around

With feet together, measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat. The tape must remain level around the body and should touch without compressing.

3

Fell, when requested

If requested

Measure vertically from the chosen kilt waistline to the level of the fullest part of the seat. This is the waist-to-hip drop used to place the end of the sewn-down pleats. Only enter it when the product asks for a fell measurement.

Typical: for most adults this is about 7 to 9 in (18 to 23 cm). If yours is far outside that, measure again or contact us.

4

Kilt length

Vertical

Kneel upright on a level floor. Ask your helper to measure from the chosen waistline down to the floor. This gives the traditional finish around the middle of the kneecap. Do not lean forward or look down while the measurement is taken.

Give us the measurement exactly as taken. Do not subtract anything, because we make the kilt to that length, and it will finish at the middle of the kneecap when you stand.

Different hem? For above the knee or midi length for women's kilts, tell us in the order notes.
